Difference in funds

Have you ever even pondered, what's it like spending over £2m on a yearling. That has never been sat on never mind ran? I could find plenty of other ways to spend it. But the focus was on Tattersalls, as it was set alight this week with four horses going for 'OVER' the £2m mark. This set's the precedent for the rich pickings in the next couple of years. Some, but very few get lucky with modest purchases, Snow Fairy or more recently Mrs. Danvers to mind. When Snow Fairy, failed to sell in the ring for less than a couple of grand. I also recall on the National Hunt scene won in the dark was a rags to riches story.

On the lower level it’s all about fun. Syndicates are dying out after the Celtic Tiger received its euthanizing. So there are plenty of empty boxes around. So apart from the well-known high flyers who is keeping racing going, I wonder?  It is expensive in relative terms to own one and keep it in training. Even with a full yard it can be a struggle and drain resources on trainers. I have had good friends in this game in the past, and just could not compete with the top yards.

The Dubawi half-brother to Silk Sari sold for 2,100,000gns

A new trend, of sorts emerging. Some stable lads acquiring cheap purchases or even free horses in some cases. Trainers letting them have access to facilities, colours, entries etc. in their name. I know some who are availing and doing quite well with one or two. So no doubt it is happening elsewhere around Ireland and just might be a way to save £2m.

Q. How do you make a small fortune in horse racing?

A. Start off with a big one!
